Cast Iron Machines
These beautiful old sewing machines are some of my favourites to work on. However, some have never been serviced since leaving the factory, and can be coated in 100 years of solidified oil, dirt and rust. To properly clean a machine in very poor condition the entire mechanism needs disassembling and reassembling, then re-calibrating. Additionally, some parts may need entirely replacing.
Unfortunately, I will no longer be working on machines that are in complete disrepair. I would need to charge several hundreds of pounds in labour costs due to the amount of time and work involved.*
It might be tricky to tell at home whether your machine is in a good condition or not, as some of them can look in bad shape initially but actually would be fine after a thorough cleanup. So I’m more than happy to take a look at it free of charge to let you know if it would be a machine I would take on. I will be giving individual quotes, but as a rough guide for one in a decent condition it will be between £60 (for one that is in good nick) to £100~ for one that needs more work.
Please note I also no longer work at all on V.S. machines (those with a “boat” or “bullet” type of shuttle)
*If you have the time and passion to fully restore the machine yourself, there are many excellent tutorials about how to do it. Please feel free to contact me and I will happily help point you in the right direction.

There are areas of rust on this machine too, but it is superficial and easy to remove. There is no varnish, and the mechanism does not need taking apart for cleaning.
